The 37th WEDC International Conference
28-Apr-2014The 37th WEDC International Conference ‘Sustainable Water and Sanitation Services for all in a Fast Changing World’ will be co-hosted at National University Civil Engineering, central Hanoi, Vietnam, 15-19th September 2014.
The WEDC International conference aims to share knowledge and develop capacity in the WASH sector, through a diverse week long programme which includes: presentation and discussion of peer reviewed papers; a capacity development programme; and fun social activities. More information about the conference can be found at the following website:

The conference has two features which make it an effective platform for sector learning and sharing. Firstly, the conference has a strong practitioner focus, with field based experience being shared alongside the more conventional academic research findings. This potent combination stimulates lively debate during sessions, which is both pragmatic and solution focussed. Secondly, the WEDC conference attendees are predominantly those working and living in low and middle income countries. Typically, more than 75 percent of a WEDC International Conference audience are nationals from around 40 low and middle income countries. Consequently learning and sharing is between peers, who face similar challenges and working contexts. As a result, the knowledge shared has more direct relevance, and is more rapidly transferable than would otherwise be the case.
The programme Monday to Wednesday is predominantly presentation and discussion of peer reviewed papers. In addition to the presentation and discussion of papers we have 4 parallel evening side events on Monday to Wednesday, which are hosted by external organisations. These 1.5 hour slots enable more in depth discussion of topical issues, and are great opportunities for programmes or projects to consult with the audience, or disseminate and discuss findings.
A capacity development programme takes place on days 4 and 5. These are great opportunities to experience face to face skills development with world class experts. Our two-day series of capacity development workshops therefore provide a fantastic opportunity for skills development in topical areas to help practitioners and address the challenges they face in a structured, focused and cost effective manner. Experts from WEDC, and other qualified partner organisations will design and deliver quality assured workshops on hot topics, both at the venue and in the field. Workshops will range from a half-day to up to two days duration. This Continued Professional Development is also ideal for WASH participants who wish to update their knowledge and explore emerging issues.
